The Hardest Skill is Breaking the Rules.
In Part 1, we talked about why "Perfect Realism" is a commodity.
But the reason most artists struggle to leave realism behind is fear.
We are... ... addicted to PBR.
PBR (Physically Based Rendering) is a safety net.
It guarantees that materials react to light correctly.
It creates consistency. It also kills creativity.
If you rely 100% on PBR, you aren't an Art Director. You are a Physics Simulator.
The difference between a Junior and a Senior isn't following the rules.
It’s knowing when to break them.
Here are the 3 ways top Stylized artists "cheat" physics:
Edit the Normals: Don't let the geometry dictate the shading.
Force the shadows to appear in specific, aesthetic shapes (The Guilty Gear method).
Light Linking: In the real world, light hits everything.
In Arcane, lights hit only what tells the story.
Turn off shadows on objects that distract the eye.
Paint the Light: Break the "Albedo" rule. Bake gradients, ambient occlusion,
and top-down lighting directly into your base color.
PBR is a great baseline. But never let "Energy Conservation" ruin a good shot.
Physics is a suggestion. Appeal is the law.
