How a simple table edit breaks a traditional pipeline, and how USD fixes it.
In our AU 2026 live demo, we took a standard prop: a dining table referenced across a full showroom layout.
In a trad... ...itional setup, an Art Director asking to "thicken the legs and raise the tabletop" means:
1- Re-exporting geometry out of 3D Max.
2- Rebuilding the shader assignments in Maya.
3- Re-aligning placement coordinates in Layout.
4- Animate and simulate the object in Houdini.
5- Export it back to Maya.
Under USD composition:
You open the source table file in 3D Max, thicken the legs, and hit save.
Because Maya’s look-dev and Layout’s placement were stacked as non-destructive USD layers over a live pointer, every single instance in the showroom updates instantly. Shaders hold. Position holds.
That’s the difference between fighting your software and directing your asset data.
